Improving Your Golf Swing Power
Posted in Golf Learning
Do you find that you just can’t seem to get the ball down the fairway no matter what you do? Improving one’s golf swing power isn’t as easy as many people think it is, but it also isn’t as difficult as you might think! How can we make such a contradictory statement? If you consider a few simple tips when it comes to improving your golf swing power, you may realize what we mean by this and may also be able to see remarkable improvement in your game.
First, keep in mind that golf is not a game of physical strength. Think of how many seniors, children, and those who don’t look particularly strong you see on the course doing quite well. Improving your golf swing power is not about doing chin-ups at the gym or lifting weights! The reason that the ball travels as far as it does is because the shaft of the golf club is somewhat flexible; as it’s pulled back around for the forward swing, it creates a whip effect. This means that potential energy is built up in the shaft and this energy is transferred to the ball when it’s hit. There is typically more energy in a golf swing than there is in a baseball swing! So improving your golf swing power is about understanding how that energy is built up and how best to transfer it to the ball; it’s not about simply forcing the ball down the fairway.
Getting clubs with more flex will improve your golf swing power. That additional flex will mean the club’s shaft is building up more energy as it comes around. Think of how your clubface hits the ball; if it feels like a solid, hard smack then you may not have enough flex in the shaft. A firmer shaft is for those who are physically stronger; this slows down the amount of force the ball is hit with so that they don’t overpower it and lose accuracy. Your physical abilities, when matched with the right club flex for you, will give you the best golf swing power.
It’s also good to remember not to try to overcompensate when wanting to increase golf swing power. Some have a tendency to virtually “fling” their club behind their head and hit the ball with all their might, thinking this will increase the ball’s distance. In reality this usually throws the entire body off balance and makes the swing so inaccurate that the ball flies off in any which way! In reality the best way to increase golf swing power is to use a strong but smooth approach and swing. That arc or plane the swing travels on is going to build up enough energy, as will the right clubs for your physical build. Remember to cock your wrists slightly just as you’re about to hit the ball; this helps to transfer that energy from the club. Do these things and you’ll have plenty of golf swing power!
