Don’t Overlook the Golf Swing Fundamentals
Posted in Golf Tips
As with most sports and games that people play, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or to make things more complicated than they need to be. Since many people struggle from the outset with a golf swing, they may overanalyze their swing and their approach. In truth, remembering the basics and simple golf swing fundamentals will do quite a bit for most amateurs when it comes to improving their swing. While it’s true that some specific problems need to be addressed, for most players if they start out their game with the proper golf swing fundamentals they won’t learn incorrect methods and won’t need to unlearn their mistakes along the way.
Learning and mastering these golf swing fundamentals is going to be important for any golfer and will help most with their game. Here are a few basics you should consider.
Your golf swing fundamentals are going to start with the method of your swing. Far too many golfers swing their arms alone when swinging their club. The swing is actually supposed to involve your shoulders and upper back as well. You pivot when you swing, not just reach with your arms. Far too many amateurs forget these golf swing fundamentals and reach with their arms, which means the club is typically pulled too straight behind their body and then the club comes down too straight as well. This creates a smacking effect on the ball, when golf is about a swinging or whip effect. That whip effect is what gives the ball distance and helps with control over it’s direction. If the swing does not originate from the shoulders but is overly controlled by the arms, the club hits the ball head-on, which is not appropriate for this game. There are of course other golf swing fundamentals you need to consider.
Another common mistake that many amateurs make is trying to put all their strength and power into their swing. This is a mistake. Golf is about smooth control, not about strength alone. The whip effect of the club will create enough power to get the ball down the fairway. Many forget these parts of golf swing fundamentals and wind themselves up when at the pin or addressing the ball so that they can hit the ball as hard as possible. Think of how golf is much like hockey – trying to power the puck down the ice isn’t always necessary. Instead a hockey player needs to push it with ease and control. Golf swing fundamentals are much the same – the ball needs to be hit with firmness but with ease and control. Overpowering it will probably put you off balance and cause your body to actually block the swing.
It’s good to remember and learn golf swing fundamentals even before you start playing regularly. But if you have been playing for years, whether you have a good swing or not, it’s good to review them as well as these basics can help anyone’s game overall.
